Before animation on a Pikkuli-episode begins, the story is pre-visualized with storyboards. Sometimes the storyboard artist first makes a quick, hand drawn version, and then makes a more exact version. But as you can see from the examples below, sometimes the sketched version and the final version of the storyboard can be very much alike!
Here is first an example from the episode "Keep The Forest Clean, Pikkuli!". The script reads:
The sun rises. Woodpecker emerges from his nesthole with his head feathers standing up. He shakes his head hard and the front feathers of his head settle. Woodpecker swings his wings around in a circle twice and begins to pound the tree relentlessly .

This next example is from the episode "Pikkuli And the Sleepy Duck".
Pikkuli wakes up beside the headboard with the Sleepy duck under his wing. Pikkuli lets out a murmur and "wakes up" the Sleepy duck by twittering.
PIKKULI: Mmmmmhhh... Pipa pipa!
The head of Sister and Brother appear over the headboard. Pikkuli gives a big kiss to the Sleepy duck.
SISTER: Yak!
